Obituary of Joseph Norman Knowles
Joseph Norman Knowles
"Joe"
May 28, 1936 ~ December 23, 2025
Joseph Norman Knowles of Byemoor, Alberta, beloved husband of Beth, passed away December 23, 2025 at the age of 89 years.
Joe was born in his Grandma Haffner’s house in Erskine, Alberta. He was the 5th child of Jonty and Ethel Knowles. As a child, he enjoyed taking care of farm animals, pets, a wild bird or two, and the odd rodent. He rode to Asdee for 8 years of schooling, sometimes doubling the horse with his siblings. Daily chore life and responsibilities, along with playing with cousins and neighbour friends gave him happiness, mishaps, and adventures. When his siblings had children, he treasured his nieces and nephews, enjoying their presence by playing games, ball or socializing over a big meal.
In 1970, he married Elizabeth Van Straten and with the addition of their 3 daughters, his life was full. He was a simple famer – a mechanic, electrician, veterinarian, welder, carpenter, horticulturist – learning what he needed to for whatever problem at hand. When farming cattle and childrearing responsibilities slowed, he enjoyed fishing, floor curling, woodworking, community crib groups and spending time with grandchildren.
Joe enjoyed music and getting second-hand instruments which he tinkered with. He loved company who would stay for a visit and was grateful for both the Byemoor community and extended family. He was known for his gentle, quiet nature. When he moved to communal living, he was known to help wheel others to their seats, welcome strangers as friends, and warm the room with a smile.
Joe is survived by his loving wife Elizabeth “Beth”; daughters: Loretta (Trevor), Carmen and Deanna (Glen); grandchildren: Taycla, Ethne, Jack, Madison, Molly, Emerson, Miranda, Nigel and Adelynn; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and their families.
Joe is predeceased by his parents Jonathan “Jonty” and Julia “Ethel” Knowles; brothers Ed and Jack; sisters Kathleen and Dorothy; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
