Obituary of Elsie Leona Meyer
Elsie Leona Meyer
(Stickel)
1937 ~ 2026
Elsie Leona (Stickel) Meyer was born Sept. 23, 1937, at Galahad, AB, to parents Katharina and Gottfried Stickel. She joined brothers Emil, Fred, John, and Otto. Elsie was the youngest by 6 years, and admitted to being spoiled by her father. At one point in early childhood, she was angry with her brother Otto, and hit him with a hoe, drawing blood. She was saved from the consequences she deserved, by hiding behind her Dad. Most of Elsie’s childhood was spent on the farm south of Coronation, where she enjoyed riding horses and life in the country. After leaving school, Elsie worked at the local grocery store.
On November 23, 1957 she married Scott Meyer and they built a life together in Coronation.
Through the years, Elsie's strong work ethic served her well at numerous jobs, including cleaning various businesses, the provincial building and courthouse. Overlapping this employment, she put in long hours at the Pop Shoppe and Bottle Depot, which she and Scott owned. The business included pool tables, arcade games, a slush machine, soft ice cream and custom decorated ice cream cakes. Once the shop was sold, Elsie was not ready to sit at home, so she eased into retirement by working for Blaine and Lorena Scheffelmaier until the Heart Tea Lunch closed.
Elsie's main priorities were her family, her well kept yard and flowers, and her dogs. Family birthdays were celebrated with cake at the Pop Shoppe, and after it was sold, at the house on Victoria Avenue. Her children and grandchildren stopped frequently at both locations for visits. Her cinnamon buns and kuga were an added bonus. Although the shop was open every day but Sunday, her flowerbeds and garden were carefully tended with eye catching results. She enjoyed watching the purple martins that made their nests in 3 bird condos in the vegetable garden. Elsie owned a series of loyal black labs, who were allowed approximately 18 inches from the entryway into the kitchen, before having a shoe shaken in their direction, as a warning not to venture further. Eventually, the pets of choice became small dogs, which had free run of the house, and were taken for walks that went for miles, often with Scott following in the truck.
Elsie’s positive attitude, sense of humour, and determination were put to good use when she experienced a mobility altering stroke in 2017. She spent almost 3 months in the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital. Elsie surpassed the medical community’s expectations and returned home for almost 8 years. In July of 2025 she moved to the long-term care facility in Consort, where she received kind and compassionate care from the staff. Her family wishes to express their extreme gratitude to the wonderful staff at the Glenrose, Coronation Home Care, Coronation Acute Care, and Consort Long Term Care for supporting Elsie during her times with them.
Elsie was predeceased by her parents Gottfried and Katherina Stickel; brothers: Fred, Emil, Otto and John; husband Scott Meyer; son-in-law Ken Schedlosky; and sisters-in-law: Shirley, Lena and Doris.
She is survived by her three children: Darlene Schedlosky, Connie (Steve) Montgomery and Darcy (Jerri) Meyer; grandchildren: Candace (Tyrone) Schmidt, Ryan (Stacey) Schedlosky, Justin (Angela) Schedlosky, Brooke Schedlosky, Adam (Kelly) Montgomery, Stephenie (Jason) Towers and Christine (Dave) Walsh; great grandchildren: Dane and Brady Schmidt, Britt and Kate Schedlosky, Brody and Kennon Schedlosky, Rylan, Reece and Raya Montgomery, Mya and Cooper Towers, Kylie (Gage) Foley and Adysen Walsh; sister-in-law Moira Stickel; as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
