Dear Mrs. Wood and Family,
I was saddened and shocked last night when I arrived home from a trip to see my sister in Dallas to learn that Dan had passed away. Bob Dunington had emailed me the briefest of messages but I found this site on-line.
I extend my deepest empathy and well wishes to you and your family in your inestimable loss. Although it has bee a very long time since I last saw and spoke to Dan, I have good memories of him.
I was born and raised in Castor but moved away when I was 14. But I did return many times over the years, most recently last May. I knew Dan and Vern Williamson and Ross Miller and so many more. We shared common interests, including a love of the outdoors and of wildlife and nature. I had not seen Dan for many years, but I always appreciated his quiet ways and his friendliness and quiet sense of humor.
My brother Dennis was best friends with Jack Dabbs, and my mother was best friends with Dan's mom. I remember his dad very well, including a day I spent with him when he worked for the creamery delivering milk in his van. I remember Jack teasing Dan about an episode where Dan accidentally discharged a 410 shotgun, I believe it was, creating a rather unusual air conditioning opening in the side of the Wood home in southwest Castor.
I share Dan's interest in wildlife, birds and photography although I am very much a learner still in bird identification and in photographic skills. But I share that love of them which Dan so clearly demonstrated in his life. I wish I had been able to spend more time getting to know him better in our adult lives.
I live in Terrace, BC and practice criminal defence law in this area. The homes you have had in Fleet, Donalda and other Alberta communities kept you and Dan close to the land which I expect you both loved. I remember that Dan being involved in inventorying burrowing owl nest sites in Alberta, although I don't remember where I read about that.
Again, my heartfelt condolences to all of you. I trust you find peace in your particular beliefs and faith and that the memories of your life with Dan will be an on-going source of comfort and strength each day.
Sincerely,
Ken Anderson

Dear Gwen: Leslie informed me of Dan's passing and his courageous fight over the past year, I know he was not one to give up easily. Gwen my heart goes out to you and your family, I so fondly remember all of the places that we roomed together while I was attending NAIT (seems like yesterday). Considering Dan's passion for just the right combination of composition, focus and exposure, one forms the impression of him raising a discussion with the one who originally said, let there be light.
I hope he would appreciate this.

I heard about Dan's passing over the weekend from my mother. I was very surprised to hear the news and saddened to know that I would not get a chance to see him again.
My mother is a friend of his wife Gwen so although I was aware of his condition I still felt quite caught off guard by the news.
I had only met Dan a handful of times, but from what I had seen myself as well as all of the good things I had heard from Gwen and my mother, I know he will be so missed.
I would like to give my best to Gwen and the kids in this difficult time, knowing that he is in a better place, smiling down on all of us.

Dear Gwen,
I was so very sorry to hear about the death of Dan. I can't begin to imagine how difficult this time must be for you and your family. I know Dan was a great husband, father, and friend and that this loss will leave a great hole in your life.
Dan was always so kind. I remember the time he helped me find the survey pins on my property and how I had to run to keep up to his walk. I cherish that memory, and hope that it can bring a smile to your face even in this time of sorrow.
You are strong and capable, and even though it seems impossible right now, I know you will find a way to get through this.
My sincere respects to you and yours,
Kathy S

Hi Gwen and Family! Peter called me this afternoon to tell me of Dan's passing, quite a shock. Dan and I go back years to Dabbs Control Surveys in 1969 where we first worked together and then through various survey companies throughout our survey careers, both as a fellow employee and contactor. Dan was always the ultimate professional in all his undertakings both in surveying and photography, and his contributions to both industries will be sorely missed.
I never knew what was more valuable in his truck, the survey equipment or the camera equipment but he always travelled with both so as to never miss a photo opportunity. I remember especially his photos from your early trip to the Amazon and his work with Burrowing Owls. He will be sadly missed.

My family and I just found out of Dan's passing and we were deeply saddened. I had the pleasure of knowing Dan and his family through my late father, Verne Williamson, and have very fond memories of our visits. I remember Dan as a kind, gentle and compassionate person who was easy to talk to. Dan was a very nice man and it was an honour to know him.
My father had very few friends but the ones that he did have were very good people and were very close to him. Dan supported my dad through his battle with cancer and personal issues. Dan was there for my dad when he needed him and I will always be grateful to him for the love and support that he gave my dad during a very difficult time. This was Dan's nature and a testament to who he was.
My condolences go out to Gwen, Norah and Dylan. I know how difficult it can be to lose a loved one. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your families.

Daniel's compassionate heart and soul are as large as the prairie skies, and he has been a special friend to me. I will greatly miss his wise counsel and our numerous philosophical conversations.
