Obituary of Laverne Grant

Please share a memory of Laverne to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Laverne Edith Grant (née Munro) became an angel on Friday June 3, 2022.

Laverne’s peaceful passing ended her agonizing 7-year journey with Frontotemporal Dementia and completed a painful and challenging time for our family.   We choose to remember her as the remarkable person she was before illness destroyed her physical & mental being.  Born the eldest twin July 11, 1943, her & her twin Vera, were the bookends of the Munro family.  Predeceased by her parents Vern Munro (1945) and Sophrona Munro (née Hoover) (1982), her brothers Don (2018) and Jim (2020), and her older sister Maryann ( May 2022).

She is survived by her devoted husband of over 55 years, Gary, her twin sister, Vera Mackinnon, her three children Colleen (Monty) Meloche, Cameron (Genevieve) Grant, and Bruce (Oksana) Grant.  Laverne took immense joy in her ten grandchildren, Grant (McKenzie), Keely, Chloe, Kiera, Natasha, Ethan, Elisa, Andrew, Myles, and Harrison, along with many nieces and nephews.

Laverne was an amazing grandmother, pie maker extraordinaire, and voracious reader.  She had a heart of service and a strong philosophy of ‘To those  much is given, much is expected’.  She spent endless hours volunteering and participated in many organizations, and social groups.

She had a deep appreciation of nature and was an environmental activist (before it was common) with an ardent desire to leave God’s beauty untouched.  Her path to heaven is surely covered with Shasta daisies and Johnny jump ups!  Laverne was extremely intelligent with an impressive quick wit.  She was a ruthless debater and a perfectionist with an abundance of practicality and creativity.  She made many beautiful projects that her children have always proudly displayed in their homes.  They will always remember her pearls of wisdom and advice.

Laverne was very thankful for a life well lived filled with an abundance of travel and adventures. She attended Vic Composite High School in Edmonton prior to graduating from the University of Alberta with her BScN in 1965.

The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Bea Dennis - Brososky for being an Angel on Earth for our mother, we will be forever grateful to you.  In lieu of flowers, the family’s wish is for everyone to do a random act of kindness in Laverne’s spirit.

A private celebration of Laverne's life will be held.
