Lora, I want to send my deepest sympathies to you and your daughter and Louellla. I got to know Calvin because Louella would hire me to babysit Brad and Calvin every now and again. I believe that the first time was when Cliff and Louella went to the Jewk Theatre to watch “Where the Red Fern grows”. The irony of this was that I was the same age as Calvin but I don’t think Louella trusted Calvin’s babysitting skills. Calvin and I became friends in high school which you know as you were there too. He stole my lunches for awhile in Grade 12 because his locker was beside mine and he knew I brought lunch from home. I let him get away with it for awhile until I ran out of babysitting money for food from the cafeteria. So I told his friend, Doug, that I knew someone was stealing my lunches and that they would be in for a surprise because I was going to put dog food in my sandwich. My lunch no longer went missing. I remember this story with a smile and fondness because it was just another one of his antics. He gave me good advice after my divorce and I always felt that he was in my corner which I didn’t know I needed until he was there. You both were always kind to me and I appreciate that. I was shocked and saddened when I saw his obituary. All the best to you and Cally.

Very sorry Lora and Cally for your loss of Calvin. Calvin was a great person that helped anybody in need with there horses and had the best stories over the years that he told over and over and we laughed every time as if it was the first. I had so many great times with Calvin at the gates and at the barn. He will be missed by many. I will miss what he always told me when I hauled up to run my horses. "I got you covered Schmitty". God bless.

Calvin has been a friend for many years and the track lost a great ambassador that will really be missed. He was a true horseman that was always there to help others. Is there any better compliment than a person that is selfless. He always brought humour to the track and I will miss him at the starting gate and his phone calls at entry time. He had so many stories (some like wine that got better with age) that he loved to share and entertain everyone. I extend my condolences at this sad time. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you and may God bless you. Jim Ralph

It will be a tough day to walk back into the barn area in the spring and not see Calvin with his smiling face and smart-ass comments. We have many fond memories of Calvin with racing in Alberta. Sincere condolences to Lora, Cally and all of the family.

I have so many fond memories of Calvin, I will cherish them dearly. Calvin was an excellent horseman, who was always willing to help someone in need. I remember one time, I had a horse named Lake Elizabeth. She was a really bad actor, so I of course, go to the BEST for help and advice....straight to Calvin. We arranged time for paddock school (of course she was on the list) and Calvin and I set out to get her cleared. Calvin spotted an iron halter hanging in the tack room (I shared a tack room with another trainer). He set out to put it onto Lizzie and she immediately spun and kicked it right out of his hand. Needless to say, Calvin decided to go without it. She was a beast on the way to the paddock, but Calvin, after several circles, got her there. He was patient with her, and after several rounds of being drug, he finally got her to stand. We never had problems after that, and she won (totally Thanks to Calvin). He was so awesome with her, that I sent her to with him to run in GP. Shawn and Tom Alcott were totally humbled by the experience, as Shawn sat with his knees bleeding from being drug around by Lizzie. Calvin sure showed them how it was done. I will miss him dearly....he was a great friend!

Q: What will you never forget about Calvin?
A: I will never forget how he always greeted me at the track! “Hey giant”(that’s being polite) lol
I loved him so much even though we would both get in trouble at the track for being blunt and speaking our minds.
He taught me so much about saddling and as a header! Always made sure I was safe and shaped me into the header I am now! Got some big shoes to fill at the track but I can do it cause he will always be there watching over me!
